About JYO

San Mateo JYO (Japanese Youth Organization) is a non-profit, recreational organization focused on building community through youth basketball. The JYO organization has been around since post World War II and was started by the Japanese American Gardeners Association, to give children of Japanese ancestry the opportunity to play team sports. Initially, the sport of choice was baseball but today basketball is the primary focus for more than 200 boys and girls in the greater San Mateo area, grades 1st through 8th.

San Mateo JYO is part of a broader Bay Area organization called NYBA (Nikkei Youth Basketball Association) that governs basketball league rules and play for youth starting in the 4th grade with participating organizations: San Francisco Associates, San Francisco Taisho, San Jose CYS, Tri City, and Palo Alto (PAYS).

Philosophy

We provide our youth with a basic foundation to learn the game of basketball, as well as, develop lifelong friendships and a strong community. Our core values include:

  • Teamwork
  • Sportsmanship
  • Discipline
  • Fun
  • Equal Play

JYO is not a competitive level basketball club or AAU team, although several JYO players play in competitive teams outside of JYO as well as go on to play in high school.

Parent Participation

JYO is a 100% volunteer and non-profit organization. Board members and coaches spend 100s of hours each season to make JYO run. Every family is expected to hold a volunteer position over the course of the season and/or their tenure within JYO, including acting as a Board Member, Committee Member, Team Manager, Coach or Assistant Coach, or helping out with various JYO activities and events during the season.
